Pukyong National University was the first university in Busan & Gyeongsangnam-do Area to successfully integrate the National Fisheries University of Busan (built in 1941 as the first fisheries institution for advanced learning) and the Busan National University of Technology (built in 1924 as the first modern technology institution) into a general national university in 1996.
PKNU is maintaining the high level of entrance score of freshmen, and employment rate of graduates among domestic national universities, and it is known as the top university with the highest thesis record per a professor. About 20 research and education organizations for national projects are run by PKNU, and it has become one of the leading universities by developing itself with specialization and internationalization programs.
PKNU campuses are at the center of youth culture with its convenient transportation and beautiful environment. Six colleges (humanities and social sciences, natural sciences, business administration, engineering, fisheries science, and environmental and marine sciences and technology) and five graduate schools are placed on four campuses. PKNU has 3,520 undergraduate students' entrance quota, about 26,000 total enrollment, and 600 professors.
