The National Oceanography Centre (NOC) undertakes integrated ocean research and technology development and provides long-term marine science capability including: major facilities; sustained ocean observing, mapping and survey; data management, and scientific advice. NOC is owned by the Natural Environment Research Council and is the UK’s leading institution for sea level science, coastal and deep ocean research and technology development, with centres in Southampton and Liverpool. NOC collaborates closely with the UK marine science community.

The NOC headquarters is home to the University of Southampton’s Ocean and Earth Science and attracts researchers and educators from around the world, who collaborate in geochemistry, geology and geophysics, marine biogeochemistry, marine biology and ecology, palaeoceanography and palaeoclimate and physical oceanography. Students have access to research vessels, technology and opportunities for fieldwork and scientific cruises not traditionally found in standard university environments.

The Graduate School at NOCS (GSNOCS) offers training at PhD level, is highly international, scientifically diverse, multidisciplinary and supports nearly 200 PhD students.
