The University of Bremen (UB) was founded in 1971 and about 23.000 people study, teach, conduct research or are employed here. Today it is one of Germany´s eleven top universities of excellence, renowned for its strength in the natural sciences.
The work carried out by its researchers, many of whom of international repute, provide important stimuli for the development of innovative ideas and the resolution of problems facing society in general. Visiting guests from all over the world enrich campus life at the University of Bremen, which is well-known in the student community as a cosmopolitan venue for studying and research. Always open for new ideas and on the lookout for ways to adapt and improve, the university administration and academic staff have been interacting with the public and working with community groups for the past forty years.
The University has very close ties and intense cooperation with several world-class marine research institutions located in the Federal State of Bremen like the Alfred-Wegener-Institute (AWI), Leibniz Centre for Tropical Marine Ecology (ZMT), Max Planck Institute for Microbiology (MPI) and many more. Therefore, our research departments cover an interdisciplinary range of topics related to marine and earth sciences like physical oceanography, marine biology, chemistry, ecology and geology, coastal engineering and social sciences to gain essential knowledge necessary for dealing with present issues of open-ocean and coastal zone research.
